The Timeline View provides a powerful visual scheduling interface that allows you to map your resources across project days. This calendar-based visualization helps streamline resource allocation and production planning through an intuitive, interactive interface.
## Understanding Timeline View
- **Purpose**: Visual scheduling and calendar planning for project resources
- **Accessibility**: Switch to Timeline View using the Timeline Tab at the top of the estimate screen.
- **Day-Based Resources**: Only line items with the unit type "Days" can be schedule in the Timeline View
> [!info] Timeline view limitations
> Only line items with the unit type "Days" can be scheduled in the Timeline View. Items with "Flat" or "Hourly" unit types are visible but cannot be scheduled on specific days.
## Interactive Day Scheduling
The Timeline View offers robust tools for day management:
### Day Headers and Types
- Hover over any day column header to access day settings
- Day settings include:
- **Name**: Change the default day name (e.g., from "Production Day 1" to "Location Scout")
- **Date**: Assign a specific calendar date to the day
- **Location**: Add location details for the day
- **Day Type**: Designate the type of day (Production, Post, Prep, etc.)
- Only Production day types generate call sheets when converted to a project
- All other day types appear on the project calendar but do not generate logistical documents
*Editing day properties by clicking on the day header in Timeline View.*
### Default Day Naming
- Days are automatically named based on their type with sequential numbering
- Example: "Production Day 1", "Production Day 2", "Post Day 1", etc.
- Custom names override these defaults and transfer to the production module
### Day Reorganization
- Drag and drop day columns to reposition them in the timeline
- Resources scheduled on a day remain associated with that day when repositioned
- This allows for flexible schedule adjustments while maintaining resource allocations
## Resource Assignment Methods
The Timeline View provides multiple ways to schedule resources across days:
### Toggle Method
- Click directly on the cell at the intersection of a line item and day to toggle the resource on/off
- Active assignments are clearly highlighted to show which resources are allocated to each day
### Drag and Drop Method
- Drag line items across day columns to schedule them on specific days
- Dragging across multiple days automatically schedules the resource for all those days
- Click on an assigned day to remove the resource from that day's schedule
### Multi-Quantity Management
- For line items with a quantity greater than 1, click the "unfurl" option to expand the item
- This allows you to schedule each individual instance separately across different days
- Example: With 3 camera operators, you can schedule one on Day 1, one on Day 2, and one on Day 3
> [!tip] Efficient resource allocation
> Using the "unfurl" option for multi-quantity resources allows for more precise scheduling and can help optimize your production budget by distributing resources exactly where they're needed.
## Syncing Across Views
Changes made in Timeline View automatically update in other estimate views:
- **Sheet View**: The line item's Unit Quantity (UNIT QTY) updates based on how many days it's scheduled for
- **Days View**: Resources appear in their assigned days
- **Budget Impact**: When resources are assigned across days, their total cost in the estimate adjusts accordingly
## Day Settings and Production Integration
Day properties set in Timeline View carry through to the production module when the project is activated:
### Name and Type Transfer
- Custom day names and types set in Timeline View become the day names and types in production
- Day types determine what kind of logistical documents are generated (if any)
### Date Assignment
- Calendar dates assigned in Timeline View automatically populate the production schedule
- This creates a seamless transition from estimation to production planning
### Location Details
- Location information entered in Timeline View transfers to the location details in the production module
- This pre-planning streamlines the call sheet creation process
